Why is the Desktop Icon for WPILib the same as VSCode?

Describe the reason for your confusion.
I assume most developers have both on their computer. I would have expected a different distinguisher. I'd like to request one if this isn't something you have already talked about before.

Are you using macOS?

On Windows and Linux, there are shortcuts that allow choosing another icon and on those platforms the WPILib logo is used. On macOS the icon is bundled with the application and can't be changed without breaking the signing.

I am! And I was able to change the icon manually - opened "Get Info" and then drag new icon to top left corner where icon is. However, it does seem odd that it doesn't have its own default different from VSCode. Anyways - solved on my end but am hoping someone might make that small change in the future!

There's no API to do that change like you're doing in GetInfo, its entirely something the user has to do. It's not something we can automate, Apple doesn't give us a way to do that.

Not automatically. Apple doesn't give us a way to change the VS Code icon ourselves. It has to be something the user explicitly does.

Ok I looked into it - and it looks like this is because WPILib is not a true fork of VSCode - it is like VSCode with Extensions. And, that does make sense because otherwise you'd have to maintain your own version of VSCode itself like Cursor and others have done. I'm satisfied I think. Still disappointed with the UX, but I'll live :) I will just continue to change it myself each year.
