Baltic Sea Research

GEOMAR Kiel and SDU Sønderborg — the western Baltic — 2025–2028.


For the scientist who has measured the sea for twenty years and has not found the words that make the measurements land.


What this world is

The RECOVER project is building sensors, AI tools, and a digital twin to measure the state of the western Baltic. The data will be precise. The digital twin will simulate the scenarios. The recommendations will be clear.

None of this is felt understanding.

A scientist who has read a summary of the findings is not the same as a scientist who has been on the deck of FS LITTORINA in August when the water sampler comes up. This world runs the research process on the scientist before the translation gap closes — or doesn't.

The session opens on the deck. The cable is going down. What you bring determines what the world does with it.


The personas

The Scientist — has measured the sea for twenty years. Has not found the words that make the measurements land.

The PhD Researcher — inside the question before the pattern hardens. The methodology is load-bearing and it is also a container.

The Engineer — builds the instrument that listens correctly. The room it reports to is not yet listening.

The Funder — holds the lever between what gets resourced and what gets asked. The portfolio starts to feel like the field.

The Policy Officer — the regulation was written from the last round of findings. The findings arrived after the last round of decisions.


The places

The Kiel Bight — 25 metres average depth. The thermocline. The dead zone forming in August. Boknis Eck on the seafloor.

GEOMAR — east shore of the Kiel Fjord. Where the time series lives. Where the project is led. The water is a short walk from every desk.

The Lab — where the samples from FS LITTORINA arrive. Where the sea becomes a number.

SDU Alsion — on the Alssund. Three institutes. Three parts of the same question. The border on the wall. The water outside every eastward window.

The Mads Clausen Institute — sensors and AI tools being built to make the algae's signal legible. The instrument is correct. The gap it was built to close is the smaller of the two gaps.

The Deck of FS LITTORINA — the only room where the sea is physically present in the research conversation. Once a month. The data begins here.


The pieces

The Microalgae — the first thing that knows before anyone measures it. Invisible until the bloom.

FS LITTORINA — the crossing that makes the data possible. The data begins on this deck, not in the lab, not in the report.


The processes

The Signal — moves from invisible to measurable to documented to reported to received. Each step introduces delay.

The Translation — the crossing where the signal loses what makes it felt. Runs correctly. Loses something at every step.

The Communication — keeps the project running between physical meetings. Keeps the gap open between them.


The positions

The Decision-Maker — the mandate exists before they arrive. It does not include the ability to feel what the authority is deciding about.

The Scientist — what the world does to whoever enters it carrying findings they cannot make land. Assigned by The Translation. Loses the observer's distance.


What to bring

What you cannot make land. A finding. A measurement. A recommendation that has not produced the decision it required. Bring it to the deck. The cable is already going down.
