Radio

What we had for PyCon 2013

http://www.bearcom.com

  • 24 radio's
  • 16 over the head headsets
  • 8 over the ear head sets
  • 8 extra batteries
  • 3-pack charger for 18 radios
  • Loss protection
  • Shipping and return shipping included
  • 6 days rental

What was wrong

Headset were ugly, so people took them off. They looked like this: http://www.novacommunications.com/images/productimages/thumbs/AARMN4018LG.jpg

I think it's worth getting something nice and subtle (like [0] or [1], and Doug had something specific in mind) so that people will keep them on (and won't feel stupid).

Other possible headset

From David [1] http://img.alibaba.com/img/pb/595/766/240/1270545508057_hz_myalibaba_web16_6909.jpg [2] http://www.radioheadset.co.uk/images/Headsets/186%20SERIES.gif

From Doug [1] http://www.bearcom.com/ecatalog/radios/radio-accessory-detail.cfm?pid=1900 :: we had these and they are nice because they fit well on any and everyone. But the sound quality is not that great. The ear piece does not fit that snugly and in a noisy environment you have to cup your hand over your ear. This is why I went with more over the head than these or the ones below.

[2] http://www.bearcom.com/ecatalog/radios/radio-accessory-detail.cfm?pid=2375 :: This has great sound quality, but people have a hard time putting it on.

[3] http://www.bearcom.com/ecatalog/radios/radio-accessory-detail.cfm?pid=2287 :: I love these headsets, but as they are in-ear people have hygiene issues with them in a conference setting. When we use them we have alcohol wipes on hand for cleaning, but people often do not like them for this reason, and end up not using them. As they are so expensive, the rental and protection plan costs go up. This is why I avoided them this past year. I was trying to save money; it was a huge mistake.

Other possibilities for next year

http://www.accesradio.com/en/ has repeaters permanently installed at Palais des Congrès de Montréal. We can just rent one of them (given that we reserve it early enough)
