The Flensburg Fjord and the Schlei. The people who tend them.
For the person who arrived to rest and left carrying something they did not order.
The water has been tending itself for longer than anyone has been measuring it. The people who live beside it have been tending it for longer than any project has been running.
They hold a record the instruments cannot hold. The Fisherman knows where the cod were before they moved. The Farmer knows which field drains to which ditch drains to which Møllebæk drains to the fjord. The Harbour Master has been noting the water colour in the margin of the log for four years without being asked. The Elder has been pointing at the water for thirty years.
Nobody has asked them to speak to each other. The Tourist who arrives without memory is the first person in a long time who might be able to receive what they hold — because she does not already know it.

The Flensburg Fjord — forty kilometres. German shore to the south. Danish shore to the north. The border runs through it halfway. The water does not register the border. The monitoring does not read it whole. The sediment holds what it was before either of those things existed.
German shore
Strandhotel Glücksburg — Sandwig Bay, Flensburg Fjord. Built 1872. The White Castle by the Sea. Thomas Mann stayed here in 1919. The photograph in the bar is from 1890. Look at the foreground, not the yacht.
Romantik Hotel Waldschlösschen — Schleswig, five minutes from the Schlei. The restaurant is named Olearius. The man it is named after is buried in the cathedral whose spire is visible from the hotel garden. He measured everything. He lacked the instrument for the Schlei.
Danish shore
Hotel Baltic — Høruphav, Als. End of the Gendarmestien. Built 1875 on the ground where the last shots of the 1864 war were fired. The grave on the road in belongs to the last Danish soldier to fall — after the ceasefire. Most do not stop.
Benniksgaard Hotel — Rinkenæs, Flensburg Fjord. Farm since 1393. Hotel since 2000. Gråsten Palace is five minutes away. The Queen looks at this fjord every summer. The jurisdiction ends at the border at the bottom of the view.
The Fisher — forty years of coordinate-precise knowledge. Not in any dataset.
The Farmer — the chain from field to ditch to Møllebæk to fjord. Both directions. Compliant. The Møllebæk still runs.
The Harbour Master — thirty years of log. Four years of margin notes nobody asked for.
The Elder — the pre-1957 record in living form. Has been pointing at the water for thirty years. Waiting for the question that lets him give it a form.
The Tourist — the clean arrival. The only position from which the record can be received without being already known.
The Season — the annual return that makes the comparison inevitable. One year against the year before against the year before. The lever is duration.
The Tending — the daily attention that holds the water between research visits. Runs in the dark, before the data cycle opens.
The Møllebæk — the connection between the field and the fjord that has no name on any map.
The Harbour Log — thirty years official. Four years margin. Never read together with the time series.
The Pre-1957 Record — distributed across four bodies. No single container. Mortal.
The 1890 Photograph — on the wall in the bar at Strandhotel Glücksburg. The eelgrass is in the foreground. Nobody has used it as evidence yet.
Attention. The willingness to stay past the photograph. The question you have not asked yet of the person at the next table.
